Is Coffee Really Good For You?
Many people love their morning coffee but have you ever wondered is coffee healthy? A Harvard University study revealed some surprising facts about drinking coffee for health benefits.
The study analyzed data from over 125,000 people for as long as 18 years. Men who drank six or more cups a day were shown to reduce the risk of having diabetes by an astonishing 54%. Women who drank the same amount reduced their risk by over 30&.
In recent years at least 19,000 studies of the health benefits of coffee have also showed that drinking coffee was far more beneficial than harmful.”Overall, the research shows that coffee is far more healthful than it is harmful,” says Tomas DePaulis, PhD, research scientist at Vanderbilt University’s Institute for Coffee Studies, which conducts its own medical research and tracks coffee studies from around the world. “For most people, very little bad comes from drinking it, but a lot of good.”
Coffee has even been shown to offset some of the damage caused by other vices, some research indicates. “People who smoke and are heavy drinkers have less heart disease and liver damage when they regularly consume large amounts of coffee compared to those who don’t,” says DePaulis.
Some of the benefits of drinking coffee have been linked to it’s high caffeine content. An eight ounce cup of drip brewed coffee contains about 85 mg which is about three and a half times more than the same serving of tea or cola or one ounce of chocolate.
Caffeine is also helpful for asthma and headaches. Though not widely known, a single dose of pain reliever such as Anacin or Excedrin contains up to 120 milligrams, or roughly the same amount contained in a large cup of coffee.
A recent study from Brazil showed that children who drink coffee with milk each day are less likely to suffer from depression. Keep in mind these children were not consuming large quantities of coffee daily. The children studied drank only reasonable amounts of coffee each day.
So the next time you enjoy a cup of your favorite coffee you may in fact be increasing your chances of being healthy. Finally something that we enjoy and consume daily isn’t bad for us. Who knew?
